The Monterey Peninsula Academy of Music was established to bring exceptional music education to the Monterey Peninsula and surrounding areas.

 

Music is universal. It has infinite variations and levels. There is a style of music to fit everyone's taste. Whether you want to sing jazz standards, play a violin concerto or fiddle tune, play a Chopin prelude on the piano, fingerpick some fiery flamenco guitar, rip an electric guitar solo, or just accompany yourself or others singing, the Academy of Music can help achieve your musical goals.

Here we focus solely on music education. We offer a family-type atmosphere with one-on-one private music lessons and group classes on practically all instruments and voice. Our curriculum includes technique, theory, ear training, sight reading, and improvisational skills. We have an extremely talented and friendly staff of well-educated teachers who are professional musicians. We believe a strong bond between student and teacher is imperative to the learning process. Our instructors are absolutely the best!

A Variety of Summer Music Programs both Affordable and Fun!


Garage Band

Calling all guitarists, bassists, singers, keyboardists, and drummers! For Girls and Boys, ages 9-18, with some experience on their instrument. Receive expert coaching from an experienced professional musician. Each session lasts 6 weeks, and includes two 90-minute classes weekly. Students will form a rock band (guitars, bass, drums, vocals, keyboards) and learn to play classic rock tunes in a live band situation. We will record the songs on a CD and perform them in a live gig!

Course fee: $300 per 6-week session


Intro to Garage Band

Never played an instrument before but want to play in a band? No problem! Here is a chance to try different instruments- guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, and learn to play in a Rock Band.  No experience necessary, open to girls and boys of all ages. Each session lasts 6 weeks, and includes two 90-minute classes weekly.

Course fee: $300 per 6-week session


Girrlz Rock!

The “Garage Band” program geared specifically for girls of all ages, taught by Tammy Bartlett.

Course fee: $300 per 6-week session


Adult Jam

Tired of sitting around playing by yourself? All tuned up but nowhere to go? Here is a chance to play with other adults in a relaxed and fun setting. Once a week 90 minute session for 6 weeks. 2 groups offered: Acoustic Folk/Bluegrass, and Electric Classic Rock. Kick out the Jams!!

Course fee: $150 per 6-week session

Explore World Music! 

Open to all instruments: here’s an opportunity to play a variety of musical styles with others in an informal class setting. Enjoy playing Celtic, Gypsy, Latin, American Traditional, and Jazz. Once a week 90 minute session for 6 weeks.

Course fee: $150 per 6-week session

Workshops

  NEW! Afro/Cuban Rhythms for Drumset and Percussion. Learn and perform these exciting rhythms from Trinidad to Cuba. Classes will be taught by Percussionist John Nova and Drummer Mike Shannon. Also, go here for info on our ongoing series of Workshops and Masterclasses.

Private and Group Instruction

We offer Private Instruction for guitar, bass, keyboards, piano, voice, violin, percussion, mandolin, banjo, and harmonica.  We also offer 2 different age levels for our Beginning Guitar Group classes: one for kids 8-17 and one for adults 18 and up.

Private Lessons: $116 per month

Our instructors are highly qualified, experienced, and have extensive performance experience. Most are already teaching in local schools. Most importantly, our instructors strive to relate their teaching to each individual student's learning style.

All Ages –Beginners to Advanced

Our current students range from 6 years old to many students in their 60's and 70's. We take care to teach what you want to learn. We strive to make playing music an important and enjoyable part of life for students of all ages and levels.

Private Lessons

Private lessons ensure that the student has the undivided attention of the teacher and can progress at a personal level.

Group Classes

Since students sometimes feel more comfortable in a group-learning situation, we also offer group classes in Beginning Guitar, Voice, and Ensemble Playing. We keep the classes small, and divide them into 2 sections- one for children and one for adults. They are held in 6-week sessions.

Regular Concerts and Recitals

Recitals and concerts are held at least twice a year. These provide students with performance experience and build confidence. Participation in music festivals, competitions and workshops is also available.

Exam Preparation

We offer full training in repertoire, studies, technique, ear training and sight-reading to prepare classical students for college entrance exams.
